- 1.0 out of 5 stars from William H. -- Poor : It was written by Irving Washington?? The cover is a terrible pixilated mess, as if they enlarged a small jpg file. The last sentence of the synopsis on the back cover states that it’s told “in a different and more subtle way than ever told before”. So this is not the original? Living in her own bubble of married bliss, she unfortunately failed to notice the first tell-tale signs of trouble ahead. The cracks appearing in their union were not visible in her eyes. Although she finally understood the cruel destruction she had caused her first partner, it was all too late to serve her any positive purpose, now that she had experienced it for herself. Karma doesn't necessarily lie in wait to strike while the iron is hot. Rather it winds and coils itself like a snake, insidiously and stealthily before making its presence felt...A very short story, hardly developed and therefore not particularly satisfying. I would have liked to read about her predicament after the event. How as a jilter and now a jiltee she managed to continue her life. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 29, 2019 )

In the first story we meet the elderly widow Mrs Manstey, who lives alone in an apartment but who takes pleasure in the view from her window. When she learns that a neighbour plans to build an extension to her house which will block Mrs Manstey's view entirely, the seemingly unassuming elderly lady decides to take matters into her own hands with devastating results. In 'The Reckoning' - the better story of the two - we meet Julia Westall, a beautiful, independently-minded young woman who divorced her first husband (with whom she had became bored) and is now married to Clement, a young man - who, like Julia, has modern ideas about marriage. However, when Clement decides to take a leaf out of his wife's book, Julia is forced into examining her beliefs and also, more importantly, her past behaviour...
